Google India's "Mapathon 2013" mapping competition

Google has announced a  mapping competition which is very unique and interesting, named as “Mapathon 2013” . This mapping competition has been introduced to improve the Google Maps service in the country. This competition is scheduled from February 12, 2013 and culminates on March 25, 2013.

Google has invited users across the India to add information about their locality in the Maps by using Google Map maker. The top 1,000 mappers in India  will be awarded Android tablets, smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise.


Registrations for the competition has already started, and users can get more information about Mapathon 2013 on official website .Google reveals the Map Maker competition first conceptualized in India to enhance creativity and now it is enhanced all over the world.  Google has stated the aim of this competition as “The core belief was that users know their neighborhoods  villages, and back yards better than anyone else, and so we designed Map Maker as the tool people could use to update these details onto a digital map.”

Google Map is one of the most popular online mapping services.  Google has continuously updated its Maps service by  adding new improved features such as panoramic images and new geographical locations across different part of the world. Now, Google Maps has added panoramic high resolution images of the Grand Canyon, with coverage of 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads of the Canyon.

Most highlighted news is Google Maps is also being used by the Election Commission of India to help North East electors to locate their polling stations and access other electoral information.
